About Vatnajökull Ice Caves
Þorri Gunnarsson has spent eleven autumns crawling drained meltwater channels on Breiðamerkurjökull and Falljökull, working out which ones will hold a roof through the winter. This site is what he wishes those channels came with: dates that are true, prices that are current, and a straight answer when the caves are shut. All eleven Vatnajökull ice cave tours and glacier hikes are laid out on the homepage.
Why this site exists
Search for the Vatnajökull ice caves in July and you get a wall of listings photographed in January, all showing the same cathedral of blue ice. What almost none of them lead with is that the natural caves close at the end of March, that the cave in the photograph melted out two winters ago, or that the meeting point is a five-hour drive from Reykjavík. Those three facts decide whether a trip works.
They belong at the top of the page, not buried in a cancellation clause.
Where the facts come from
Season dates, safety rules and cave formation come from the operators running the tours, the Vatnajökull National Park guidance and the regional tourism board. Glacier figures come from published research on the ice cap. Prices, durations, ratings and review counts are read off the live booking pages and rechecked when the page is updated; the date of the last check sits under the hero.
Traveller quotes are reproduced from the operators' own listings with the reviewer's country and month, shortened only where marked.
What we are not
We are not a tour operator, a travel agency or a seller of travel, and we own no super jeeps. We take no bookings and no payments. Every tour on this site is run by an Icelandic operator and sold through a booking platform, and your contract is with them.
Cancellations, refunds, pickup times and the decision to call off a departure are theirs to make.
How the site pays for itself
Links to tours are affiliate links. Book through one and the platform pays a commission at no extra cost to you, and the price you see is the price they charge on their own site. The commission does not change which tours appear here or the order they sit in.
When a tour is not worth booking in a given month, the page says so, which is why the summer answer on this site is a glacier hike rather than a cave.
Corrections
Cave conditions change from week to week and operators adjust prices without notice. If something here is out of date or wrong, write to info@vatnajokullicecaves.com and it gets fixed. Reports of a closed cave or a changed meeting point are the most useful thing you can send.
